Easter each year marks not just chocolate eggs galore on the shelves in the Polgoon deli but the start of the Winemakers Tours. Tours are taken by either John my husband the wine and cider maker here or Ben my son. Ben has been away in South Africa working on a game reserve so we are very exciting for his return and just in time to start the vineyard tours on 2nd April. Ben will see a few changes when he returns, both in the vineyard and the winery. We are coming to the end of setting up the vineyard for the new season. The time consuming process of pruning followed by tying down each of the new fruiting canes on the vines to the supporting wires is almost at an end. There’s 11, 000 vines so it’s no mean feat. We have also ploughed the top field in preparation for our new planting of Sauvignon Blanc which is very exciting. Few Sauvignon Blanc grapes are planted in this country as they are difficult to grow in our climate but we have some advantages down here in Penzance that we are putting to good use. Its ground breaking and a little risqué but we have weighed up the situation carefully and feel confident with our Sauvignon Blanc being planted this spring. Tours last approximately 1.5 hours and include a walk around the vineyard here at Polgoon and a look at the production processes used to produce our unique and special drinks here at the farm. They conclude with a talk through the tasting techniques and of course the all-important tasting itself. With an excellent 2014 vintage shortly to be released a Winemakers Tour this season at Polgoon is sure to be an enjoyable event. The tours take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 2pm and are £10 per person. Please call 01736 333946 to book in advance as tours do become full quickly.
Hope to see you all soon, Kim Coulson.
