And here’s why…

You may have noticed that English wine is big news at the moment and there are a whole host of reasons why it’s such a hot topic. So, if you want to impress friends with your English wine knowledge, here’s our top 10 facts to get you started:

  • The English wine industry is one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors in the UK, making a significant contribution to the rural economy both in terms of employment rates and tourism etc
  • Through distilleries, vineyards, bottling plants, logistics companies and retailers, the wine and spirit trade supports over 550, 000 jobs in the UK, contributes £50bn in economic activity and pays more that £17.5bn in tax
  • There are approximately 500 vineyards across England and Wales and 133 wineries – of which Polgoon, here in Penzance, is one
  • 1 million vines are set to be planted in the UK this year – the largest number ever planted in a single year in the UK.  Here at Polgoon we have 14,500 vines
  • Approximately 5 million bottles of wine are currently produced each year in the UK – with a projected doubling in the next few years alone
  • English Sparkling Wine is now recognised and sold around the world – last year it was shipped to 27 countries
  • This year two Champagne houses have invested in the UK wine industry, showing the confidence there is in the future of this industry and it’s long term growth
  • English wines are now winning gold medals at international awards which was unthinkable 10 years ago but, with time comes knowledge and experience and this is really starting to show as English winemakers are creating some of the best wines in the world – even the French like it (and we have emails to prove this!)
  • Oz Clarke, wine writer, presenter and broadcaster, says of English wine; “Champagne has 200 years of marketing wine behind it, but there’s no reason why the Brits can’t compete. The grapes from English vineyards could become the best Sparkling Wines in the world.”
  • The future of English winemaking looks very bright, so please continue to support your nearest vineyard and enjoy your own locally-grown wine.
