– Cornish wine with a Cornish view –
In Cornwall there’s always been a natural link between the artist and the landscape.
This connection to the land and the sea is something John Coulson, owner and winemaker at Polgoon, also feels strongly about. Originally fish merchants in Newlyn where the sea provided their livelihood, the Coulsons then moved to Penzance, planted a vineyard and now ‘live off the fruits of the land’, although some say they can taste the Cornish sea breeze in the wines.
This love of Cornwall inspired the Coulson’s to approach Newlyn School of Art to commission the tutors to create artwork for the label of their latest vintage, the Bacchus 2016. The brief was simple, ‘create artwork to portray this passion for the Cornish landscape – Art for the Bacchus’.
Art for the Bacchus will be an annual commission; with every new vintage of Bacchus a new label will be commissioned from one of Newlyn’s tutors with the aim of building up a collection of art labels from the county’s best artists.
“The Bacchus is a single estate, single variety wine – grown here and made here – just minutes from Newlyn School of Art. Our Bacchus 2016 has exuberant aromas of lime zest with gooseberry and elderflower on the palate. This limited edition has a lengthy finish with a balanced minerality, reminiscent of Cornish shores”, says John Coulson.
Paul Lewin’s ‘Veor Cove’ was chosen for the label for this year’s commission. A painter of the coast and sea, Lewin has emerged as one of the leading contemporary landscape painters in the Southwest. Each bottle from the limited edition of 1500 is signed by the artist and the winemaker and each label is individually numbered from 1 to 1500.
“Art and wine are perfect partners, both have the power to nourish the soul…It will be fabulous to watch this collection of artwork grow over the years; different artists, different styles, but always the same inspiration; a love for Cornwall.” – Henry Garfit, Newlyn School of Art.
Art for the Bacchus bottles will be available from September 2017 from www.polgoon.com from the Polgoon Vineyard Shop and at selected outlets: The Gurnards Head, The Coastguard, The Godolphin Arms, The Mount Haven Hotel, The Nare Hotel, Tate, The Tinners Arms and the Porthminster Beach Cafe.
