We’re often asked how best to pair festive food with our wines and ciders. This year we thought we’d share a few of our favourite ideas by creating a festive guide from John Coulson, owner and winemaker at Polgoon.

PRE-CHRISTMAS PARTIES, GATHERINGS & CHRISTMAS EVE:

Celebrate the festive season with our refreshing Sparkling Elderflower Wine. We use the traditional method to make this sparkling wine and infuse it with a touch of elderflower to give it a distinctive floral finish.

On Christmas Eve our Pinot Noir Sparkling Rosé makes a perfect toast to the imminent arrival of Santa! This single estate sparkling wine, with a nose of zesty citrus and toasty crumb and a palate of tangerine, honey and spice makes an ideal accompaniment to pre-Christmas canapés and nibbles.

 CHRISTMAS DAY, BREAKFAST: SMOKED SALMON & EGGS

Bubbles for breakfast? Try our Seyval Blanc Sparkling. This contemporary, dry, well-balanced wine is crisp and clean with a light acidity to cut through the saltiness of the salmon.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH – STARTER: SEAFOOD, PRAWNS OR CORNISH CRAB

When paired with the flavours of Cornish seafood, our fruity, off dry, crisp Rondo & Pinot Noir Rosé is simply delicious!

MAIN COURSE: GOOSE, TURKEY OR VEGETARIAN

Both goose and turkey pair well with our Rondo Red Wine because it’s light and fruity with a little tannin.  But if you’re going for a vegan or vegetarian option, the characterful Bacchus White Wine or our lightly oaked Seyval and Ortega make a perfect match.

PUDDING: TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS PUDDING

We love it with our unique Raspberry Aval. The fruit driven, high acidity is just right to cut through the richness of both the pudding and the Cornish clotted cream.

SUPPER: HONEY ROAST HAM

Pairs perfectly with a Polgoon cider. A lightly sparkling, fruit driven, dry cider that offsets the sweetness of the ham and works well with some of grandma’s homemade chutney!

MINCE PIES AND DARK CHOCOLATE

We love these treats with our rather special Pinot Noir Sparkling Rosé. The dry, high acidity of this sparkling  cuts through those brandy-rich soaked fruits and the bitterness of the dark chocolate.

CHRISTMAS CHEESE

Try our Seyval Blanc and Ortega White Wine. The blending of the two varieties of grape and the light oaking makes the flavours a great match for all sorts of soft, strong or mild cheeses.

BOXING DAY BUFFETS:

Boxing Day is a day for feasting on the left overs!  Cold meats, hams , stuffings, pickles and cheeses which all pair well with our ciders or our fruity Rondo Red or Rondo and Pinot Noir Rosé.

NEW YEAR’S EVE:

Back to celebrating again! Choose our special Pinot Noir Sparkling Rosé to welcome in the New Year with friends and family.  It’s perfect with canapés or on it’s own as an aperitif.

We also produce a range of soft drinks that are perfect for those who aren’t drinking alcohol or for anyone under 18.
